URIC ACID

• Uric acid is the byproduct of purine metabolism (purine is converted to hypoxanthine to xanthine then finally to uric acid by xanthine oxidase enzyme).
• Uric acid compounds are produced in the liver from precursors obtained from diet (via GI tract) and purine endogenously produced by cells in the body, and are removed from the body via renal tubule and GI lumen.
• Uric acid imbalance arises when there is any abnormality in their production and removal.

purine metabolism uric acid regulation

hypouricemia

mechanism of hypouricemia
2 main causes of hypouricemia:
• decreased purine metabolism & synthesis
• increased renal excretion

hyperuricemia

mechanism of hypercalcemia
2 main causes of hyperuricemia:
• increased purine metabolism & synthesis
• decreased renal excretion
