COAGULATION

• Routine coagulation studies include clotting times, coagulation factor and regulator assays, and fibrinolysis studies.
Clotting times include partial thromboplastin time (PTT), prothrombin time (PT), international normalized ratio (INR), and thrombin time (TT)
Coagulation factor assays measure the activity level of specific coagulation factors to diagnose factor deficiencies such as factor VIII deficiency in hemophilia
Coagulation regulator assays measure the activity level of regulators of the coagulation cascade such as protein C and antithrombin
Fibrinolysis studies include fibrinogen and D-dimer
• In addition to coagulation studies decribed above, platelet count (included in CBC) is used to evaluate for hemostasis disorders.
• Details on test characteristics and utilities, along with lists of differential diagnoses and algorithms deriving from test results, are covered separately (click on each item to learn more).
